[INNEWS Comprehensive Report] Recently, Jean-Francois Tain, Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister of Cambodia, said in an interview with the media that despite some negative news, Chinese tourists are still expected to continue visiting Cambodia.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has returned to Phnom Penh after visiting China and participating in the China-ASEAN Expo. At a press conference at Phnom Penh International Airport, a reporter asked about the impact of telecom fraud crimes on Cambodia’s tourism industry, especially whether the decrease in the number of Chinese tourists has become a problem.

Jean-Francois Tain responded that every meeting between Prime Minister Hun Manet and Chinese President Xi Jinping, leaders of the Guangxi Autonomous Region and Chinese entrepreneurs is inseparable from the topic of Chinese tourists, because tourism is one of the important pillars of the Cambodian economy. Despite some negative news, the shrinking global economy is the main reason for the decline in Chinese tourists.

Jean-Francois Tain added that during his visit to China, he came into contact with some important Chinese companies, and they were more concerned about investment opportunities than social security issues.

He believes that once the global economy recovers, Chinese tourists will start traveling to Cambodia again. Jean-Francois Tain emphasized that due to the impact of the global epidemic, Cambodia’s tourism industry still faces challenges. Not only the number of Chinese tourists has decreased, but the number of tourists from neighboring countries, Europe and the United States has not yet returned to pre-epidemic levels.
