The destinations and departure points of these flights include Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Ho Chi Minh City and other cities. Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, an international airport that costs US$880 million, covers an area of 700 hectares, has 38 parking spaces and a terminal building of 81,800 square meters. It is invested by Yunnan Investment Group and is constructed by Yunnan Construction Investment Group. and Yunnan Aviation Industry Investment Group are responsible for operations. It is the first international airport implemented by a Chinese-funded enterprise overseas in the BOT model, giving wings to Cambodia’s tourism and economic development.
Top Sopheak, spokesman for the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, praised Siem Reap’s Angkor International Airport for its important contribution to Cambodia’s tourism industry. By 2023, the airport’s initial passenger throughput will be 7 million passengers per year, and is expected to increase to 12 million passengers by 2040. This growth trend heralds a booming economy in Cambodia.
It is predicted that Cambodia’s economy will grow by 6.6% or even 7% in the next few years, and it is expected to receive 5.6 million international tourists in 2024.
