Cambodian Political Elite Expresses Deep Condolences Over the Demise of Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang

INNEWS-On October 27, according to Chinese state media, Comrade Li Keqiang, former Premier of the State Council of China, and a standing member of the 17th, 18th, and 19th Central Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China, passed away due to a sudden heart attack on October 26, 2023, while resting in Shanghai. Despite the best rescue efforts, he demised on October 27 at 00:10 hours, at the age of 68. Premier Li Keqiang’s passing has triggered widespread mourning both domestically and internationally.

Condolence messages from multiple Cambodian political elites

Prominent figures in Cambodia’s political circles have expressed profound condolences over this loss. Former Cambodian Prime Minister and current Chairman of the People’s Party, Hun Sen, sent a condolence message to Chinese President Xi Jinping on October 27, lamenting the demise of Li Keqiang, stating it as a “huge loss for the Chinese people and the Communist Party of China.” Hun Sen also remarked that Li Keqiang was a good friend to Cambodia, and made valuable contributions to the friendly relations between the two nations.

On February 10, during his tenure as the Premier of the State Council, Li Keqiang held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who was on an official visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Hong Manet, also mourned the demise of Li Keqiang, praising him as an outstanding political figure dedicated to national stability. Hong Mane recalled Li Keqiang’s official visits to Cambodia in 2018 and 2022, during which several cooperative documents covering infrastructure, agriculture, and energy sectors were signed. Li Keqiang actively engaged with ASEAN leaders during the China-ASEAN and ASEAN plus Three Summits, promoting regional cooperation.

Furthermore, Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni and Parliament Speaker Khun Sodary also expressed their condolences over Li Keqiang’s passing, emphasizing his significant contributions to the friendly relations between Cambodia and China, and to collaborative projects between the two nations.

On the afternoon of November 9, 2022, then Premier of the State Council of China, Li Keqiang, held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh.
