According to a Bloomberg report on August 22, the 73-year-old former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra flew from Singapore to Thailand on the same day, ending his 15-year overseas exile career. Thaksin bowed to a portrait of Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn after arriving at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport and waved to hundreds of supporters dressed in red.
According to reports, Thaksin was arrested by the Thai police shortly after arriving in Thailand and is expected to be handed over to the Supreme Court later on the 22nd. Thaksin had previously faced 10 years in prison for several corruption cases. It was not immediately clear how long Thaksin would serve in prison, or whether the court would allow him to serve in hospital or at home.
In May of this year, Thaksin stated that he would go through judicial procedures,Request permission to return home. The “South China Morning Post” reported that there are many speculations that Thaksin may be allowed to serve his sentence in a medical institution dedicated to detaining prisoners after returning to China, and will quickly seek a royal pardon.
Just the day before Thaksin returned home,Thailand’s Pheu Thai Party and 10 other political parties held a press conference, announcing that they will form a new government in the form of an 11-party coalition, and elect him as the prime minister candidate of the Pheu Thai Party to participate in the election on the 22nd.
