Indonesia buys over 120,000 tons of rice from Cambodia

[INNEWS Comprehensive Report] On August 16, Cambodian Minister of Commerce Pan Sosak held bilateral talks with Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Pahala Nugraha Mansury, and reached an agreement on rice procurement between Cambodia and Indonesia.

In order to maintain the country’s food security and consumption, Indonesia has decided to purchase more than 120,000 tons of rice from Cambodia. Among them, Bulog Company and Green Trading Company will purchase and sell 100,000 tons of rice, and ID Food Company will purchase 25,000 tons of high-grade fragrant rice from members of the Cambodian Rice Federation.

The two sides agreed to re-sign the memorandum of understanding on rice trade up to 250,000 tons per year, valid for 4 years, and establish a mechanism to promote communication and coordination of rice trade between the two countries.

Pahala Nugraha Mansury stressed the importance of focusing on food security in Indonesia and finding more markets for rice.

Cambodian Minister of Commerce Pan Sosak urged Indonesia to increase orders from Cambodia in the form of government and government, private and private, and encouraged Indonesian investors to invest in rice production in Cambodia, attract investment and set up rice factories in accordance with the standards for exporting to Indonesia and international markets . He also encouraged meetings between businesses of the two countries to decide on the export of rice and other agricultural products to Indonesia.

In a recent meeting, Dith Tina, Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said that Cambodia has always been open to Indonesian investment in the Cambodian agricultural sector, and supports the process of exporting Cambodian rice to the Indonesian market to be smoother and more efficient. Meanwhile, the talks focused on the Indonesian side’s interest in investing in certain parts of the value chain of the agricultural sector, be it rice mills, warehouses or logistics infrastructure. The Indonesian side is also interested in investing in the supply of urea to Cambodia.

It is understood that on August 11, Prime Minister Hun Sen held a video meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. The Indonesian side expressed their hope to import rice from Cambodia to meet the needs of the Indonesian domestic market.
