The Ministry of Education of China and Cambodia signed a cooperation agreement, and Chinese is gradually entering Cambodian student textbooks​


[INNEWS Comprehensive Report] Put Samit, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education of Cambodia, recently went to Beijing, China, and had an in-depth exchange with Hu Zhiping, Deputy Director of the Chinese and Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education of China, to discuss the implementation of the “China-Cambodia Ministry of Education on Cooperation in Chinese Education in Cambodian Secondary Schools” Memorandum of Understanding for the project.

Put Samit said that the memorandum of understanding signed by the Ministry of Education of Cambodia and China has promoted bilateral cooperation in the field of education. To promote the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, the Ministry of Education of Cambodia has established a Chinese Language Education Coordination Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Hang Chuon Naron.

In order to effectively and efficiently develop Chinese language education in Cambodia, the first step is to pilot Chinese teaching in 20 public middle schools. Hu Zhiping, deputy director of the Chinese-Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Education of China, said that Cambodia and China have a close friendship and a long history. Now that the cooperation between the two countries in various fields is deepening, the demand for language human resources has increased significantly. This year marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and China and the “Cambodia-China Friendship Year”. China will send high-quality experts to assist the Cambodian side in developing courses, designing teaching materials and training local teachers to meet the needs of the Cambodian side. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Education, at present, there are more than 100 educational institutions offering Chinese courses in the Kingdom of Cambodia, with more than 100,000 students learning Chinese.

In recent years, the Chinese Language and Foreign Languages Exchange and Cooperation Center has assisted the Royal Academy of Cambodia in offering undergraduate and advanced Chinese teaching training courses, and supported the training of Chinese language teachers in Cambodia.

It is worth mentioning that on November 9, 2022, the Ministry of Education of Cambodia and the Ministry of Education of China signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the development of Chinese language education cooperation projects in Cambodian secondary schools. Under the memorandum of cooperation, Cambodian public junior high schools (grades 7 to 9) and senior high schools (grades 10 to 12) will add Chinese subjects. When students choose foreign language learning subjects, in addition to the existing English and French, they can also Choose to enroll in Chinese subjects. This marks that Cambodia has started to incorporate Chinese language education into the formal Cambodian national education system.
