[INNEWS Comprehensive Report] Hun Sen, Chairman of the Cambodian People’s Party and Chairman of the King’s Supreme Advisory Committee, revealed during his meeting with Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of the Japanese Foundation (NIPPON Foundation) that he would be interested in visiting Myanmar together with Japan.

During the talks held on October 11, the two sides reached an agreement on this.

During the talks, the Japanese side praised Hun Sen’s outstanding leadership and emphasized that he successfully transformed Cambodia from war and crisis into a peaceful and prosperous country. The Japanese side also warmly invited Hun Sen to share his successful experience and leadership wisdom, and expressed his willingness to compile relevant literature on his leadership abilities for Japan to learn from.

The meeting also held in-depth discussions on the Myanmar issue, and Hun Sen expressed his desire to improve the situation in Myanmar.

It is understood that on January 7, 2022, then Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen arrived in Myanmar for talks with the Myanmar military government. This was also the first foreign leader to visit Myanmar since the Myanmar military launched a coup nearly a year ago.

During his visit to Myanmar, Hun Sen hoped that the visit would promote “reducing tensions.” Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, who accompanied him on the visit, said before the trip that the purpose of the visit was to pave the way for an improvement in the situation in Myanmar by “creating a conducive environment for inclusive dialogue and political trust among all parties.”
